Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSTB

S-G2; C-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-f’’. Embellished chant (App. 2) permeates the imitative texture that introduces textual phrases; textural continuity with overlapping phrases prevails. To complement the chant structure, Appenzeller restates the polyphonic material associated with the two initial textual phrases, “Ave, regina…” and “Ave, Domino…” (mm. 1-19 equal mm. 20-38) with minor exceptions.[1] Melismatic text setting dominates together with limited concern for declamation of the Pre-Tridentine text. Final C.

1. Identical or similar statements of the complete polyphonic texture congruent with “Ave, regina caelorum” and “Ave, Domino angelorum” define Ave regina caelorum settings by B. Appenzeller (AC009), A. De Silva (AC035), H. Isaac (AC061), J. Mantua (AC062), B. Klingenstein (AC064), G. P. Palestrina (AC095) and Anon (AC186).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
