Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 2) appears with “ave” in the A of Chr. I (mm. 1-3) and T of Chr. II (mm. 6-8), “radix sancta” in C, T and B of Chr. I (mm. 15-9), and permeates the full texture associated with repeated statements of “gaude” (mm. 30-4). Textual phrases are defined through antiphonal treatment, contrasts of texture and cadential articulation. Choral antiphony and tutti sections, characterized by voice independence, are of equal significance in the antiphon. The second stanza (“Gaude…”), introduced by Chr. II and primarily constructed upon a chant-related motive is followed at the distance of a semibreve with identical material in Chr. I with an outburst of 3-6 statements of “gaude” per voice (mm. 31-4); an intensification of the tutti is created with a statement of “gaude gloriosa” a whole tone higher (g, mm. 36-9). The textual/musical material of stanza two is repeated (mm. 49-65 equals 66-81) followed by a coda of 11 mm. with text “et pro nobis…exora.” Declamatory text setting of the Pre Tridentine text prevails. Tonal implications occur throughout the setting. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
