Scores

Polyphonic ensemble STX

D-G2; T-F1; Ct-F2. Paraphrased chant (App. 1) is placed in D within a contrapuntal fabric that emphasizes the D/T axis. Brief anticipatory passages introduce specific words or textual phrases (e.g., “redemptoris,” “surgere,” “tuum” and “sumens”). Principal cadences conclude with an octave or 10th between D and T. Whereas the Ct is textless, except for text incipits, the D and T exhibit melismatic style with limited concern for declamation. Final F with occasional insertion of b♭; editorial b flats are necessary.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
