Scores

[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. Chant (App. 1) normally appears intact at the beginning of textual phrases but is treated with freedom as voices unfold. Chant permeates the imitative, contrapuntal fabric; the initial motive for “peccatorum miserere” is stated 24 times. The only passage in homorhythmic and syllabic styles involves the first statement of “surgere qui curat populo.” A primarily melismatic text setting prevails. Occasional unprepared dissonances occur most notably in measure 121 (f in B simultaneously with e” in S followed by g” in A). Because of extensive development of textual phrases, this antiphon is one of the lengthier settings comprising 176 measures. Final a (1.p.), F, b♭ signature (2.p.).
