Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F4. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are clearly defined through contrast of voice groupings, rhythmic activity and cadential patterns within a predominantly homorhythmic and pseudo contrapuntal style. Vecchi employs slight chromaticism for the intial text “alma redemptoris mater”: A, d, A, D, g, A, d. Characteristic of this brief setting (38 mm.) are harmonic progressions with root movement in fifths (e.g., D, G, C, G, C supports “tu quae genuisti”). Declamatory text setting primarily in syllabic style even in passages of minums and semiminums (e.g., “succurre cadenti”) prevails. Final a.

Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
