Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTTB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C2; T-C3. Entire range, f-g’’. Chr. II: A-G2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. Entire range, B♭-c”. High clefs. C voices of Chr. I in similar range (d’-g’’) as are T voices of Chr. II (f-a’). Chant (App. 1) articulates “peccatorum” (Chr. II, T II, mm. 46-7 and Chr. I, C I, mm. 53-4). Stabile exploits the antiphonal contrasting ranges of the choirs, but with lowest voice common to both choirs (see “quae pervia…manes,” mm. 7-13 and “succurre cadenti,” mm. 21-3). Passages in consecutive 10ths between outer voices, C I/T, (“prius ac posterius,” mm. 39-40 and “sumens illud, mm. 42-4) are unique to Chr. I. Texture ranges from independent voices (e.g. “peccatorum miserere, mm. 60-4) to homorhythmic “surgere qui curat,” mm. 23-5). Full voice (8 voices) texture is relegated to initial textual phrase, “Alma redemptoris” (mm. 1-6), “surgere qui curat populo,” mm. 23-7 and “peccatorum miserere,” mm. 60-64; the latter two phrases are preceded by silence. Within the opening three measures (“Alma” in breves), overlapping choirs announce the tonal area (F-C-F) Choirs are harmonically independent. F final, b♭ signature.
