Chant (App. 1) introduces textual phrases (e.g., “alma,” D, Q, and “Tu quae,” D, A, Q, B) with initial plainsong pitches but also emphasizes specific words (“redemptoris mater,” A, Q, T, “tuum sanctum,” D, A, B, T and “peccatorum,” A, T, B) primarily in semibreves. A motive in semibreves associated with “sumens illud” (D: f’, c’’, d’’, b♭’, c’’, b♭’) and imitated in B beginning on c, (mm. 69-72) does not correspond with 16th-c. antiphonaries cited in App. 1. An imitative contrapuntal texture with overlapping phrases defines the antiphon. Syllabic style with occasional short melismas characterizes text setting. Text repetition of sub-phrases or specific words (“sucurre cadenti,” mm. 22-31; “surgere…populi,” mm. 32-9; and “peccatorum miserere,” mm. 75-76) suggest developmental techniques. Final F, b♭ signature.
