Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: [S]-G; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. Range, B♭-f’’. Chr. II: [S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. Range, B♭-c’’. High clefs. “Alma” intonation in undesignated voice. Structural devices include overlapping phrases, polyphonic and homophonic textures, contrasting mensuration and antiphonal techniques. Framed by tutti segments for the initial “redemptoris…caeli,” mm. 1-7) and concluding (“pecatorum miserere,” mm. 51-5) texts, this antiphon also includes similar antiphonal techniques associated with “tuum sanctum genitorum” (mm. 21-5), “ac posterius” (mm. 28-30) and “sumens illud, ave” (mm. 42-6); the last textual segment (mm. 37-46) in triple mensuration and homophonic texture contrasts with the surrounding material. Porta’s Alma redemptoris mater appears in score notation in BolC Q40, an early 17th-c. manuscript, with text included only in the S of each choir. Final F, b♭ signature.
