Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C1; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. Entire range, A-e’’. “Alma” intonation (T, 6 initial pitches of chant, App. 1). Plainsong also introduces textual phrases to permeate the imitative polyphonic fabric: “redemptoris,” mm. 1-3; “quae pervia,” mm. 4-7; “et stella,” mm. 11-5; Gabrielis,” mm. 36-8; and “peccatorum,” mm. 41-6. A brief homorhythmic passage defines “tuum sanctum.” Third-related harmonies (F & D) with f and f♯ in A emphasize “mirante tuum.”[1] Except for melismas associated with “stella” (T/B, mm. 13-6) and “posterius” (A/T, mm. 34-7, a syllabic text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Metallo’s Ave regina coelorum (AC083) illustrates an identical procedure. The presence of cross-relationships is quite common; on the other hand, pitch inflections in one voice are infrequent.
