Scores

[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble

[C I]-C1; [C II]-C1; [A I]-C3; [A II]-C3; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4; [B]-F4. A II tacet in 3.p.; C II & T II added in 4.p. Entire range, D-f’’. Chant (differs slightly from App. 1), pitched on F, treated as cantus firmus in continuous semibreves[1] (B) in each pars. No evidence of chant influence on upper voices. Except for brief initial imitative passages for each of the four partes, a full voice texture of independent lines prevails. The antiphon is devoid of homophonic/homorhythmic passages. Of particular interest are the passages saturated with succinct melodic/rhythmic motives: “porta manes,” 1.p., mm. 21-6, and “succure cadenti,” mm. 30-6; “natura mirante,” 2.p., mm. 53-61; and “ac posterius,” 3.p., mm. 76-83. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. D-Mbs Mus.ms. 519 includes 6 Marian antiphons, three attributed to C. Martin (AR069, AC079, and RC133, two to O. Lassus (RC114 and SR145), and one anonymous [C. Martin?] Salve regina (SR337), each of which includes a cantus firmus of the appropriate Marian antiphon in continuous semibreves (square black chant notation in source).
