Scores

[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Chant (App. 1) normally appears intact at the beginning of phrases but is treated with freedom as the voices unfold; except for the presence of semibreves for the initial textual phrase (S & T), chant assimilates the rhythmic gestures of other voices. Chant permeates the imitative contrapuntal fabric but appears at pitch most consistently in T and S. Text setting reflects a combination of syllabic and melismatic styles. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Tu que genuisti

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
