Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

D-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. “Alma” intonation (App. 1) in T; no evidence of chant influence for remainder of antiphon. A sectional structure is created by presence of corona capping final chords of textual phrases, “redemptoris mater,” (mm 1-3); “que pervia caeli porta manens,” (mm. 4-8) and “tu que…genitorem,” (mm. 17-25), or silence: “et stella…cadenti, mm. 9-13, and “surgere curat populo,” mm. 13-17. Except for the imitative treatment that defines “virgo prius ac posterius,” a full voice homophonic/homorhythmic texture prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
