Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-f’’. Chant (App. 1) permeates the imitative contrapuntal fabric; initial pitches of textual phrases and even of entire statements of some phrases (“redemptoris mater,” “surgere,” and “tuum sanctum”) are faithful to the chant melody. The text setting involves a combination of syllabic and melismatic style with lengthy melismas for “alma,” “maris,” and “genuisti.” In contrast with the prevailing duple mensuration the text “surgere qui curat populo” is in triple mensuration. Final F, b♭ signature.
