Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f.’’ “Alma” intonation (T). Each of the first two textual lines consist of 8 mm., the third line of 9 mm. and the 4th line of 18 mm. suggest a concern for structural symmetry. Textual phrases are defined through contrast of texture, cadential treatment and silence. Except for an imitative texture that defines “virgo…ac posterius” (mm.26-32), the remainder of the antiphon reflects a full voice homorhythmic texture. A syllabic text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
