Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. “Alma” intonation in T. Chant (App. 1) is limited to “redemptoris…coeli” (C), “Gabrielis abore” (C), for which the chant associated with “redemptoris…” is used, and “sumens…miserere” where it appears in the B in semibreves; chant motive coupled with “peccatorum miserere” permeates the texture. Within a prevailing imitative contrapuntal texture, only “surgere qui curat populo” in homorhythmic style and triple mensuration contrasts with the surrounding material. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
