Polyphonic ensemble STX

[C]-C3; Ct-C4; T-C4. Entire range, d-b’. No evidence of chant. A texted
C with two supporting voices (“Alma redemptoris” incipits) constitutes the prevailing texture. Brief imitative passages between Ct and C (mm. 26-8 and 32-3) are supported by sustained pitches in T. A contrasting duo for C and T from “quae genuisti” through “tuum sanctum genitorem” (mm. 49-70) constitutes most of the third textual phrase. Melismatic text setting prevails. Final e.

Description

The text, “Anima me liquefacta est” only appears in ModE X.1.11 whereas Alma redemptoris mater is included in the other manuscripts (Frere, Antiphonale Sarisburiense, p. 491. An antiphon for Assumption of the BVM).

Anima mea liquefacta est, ut dilectus locutus est.
Quaesivi et non inveni illus; vocavi et non respondit mihi.
Invenerunt me custodes civitatis, percusserunt me et vulneraverunt me.
Tulerunt pallium meum custodes murorum.
Filiae Hierusalem, nuntiate dilecto quia amore langueo.

Song of Songs 5:6-8

My soul failed when my beloved spoke;
I sought him but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
The watchmen of the city found me, they smote me and they wounded me.
The keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.
Daughters of Jerusalem, tell my beloved that I am sick of love.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
