Scores

[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[C]-G2; [A]-CI] [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. The paraphrased chant (App. 1) appears at the beginning of textual phrases and is usually imitated in other voices (“manes,” “surgere,” “tuum,” “sumens” and “peccatorum”). Occasional use of two-voice (“redemptoris mater,” “tu quae genuisti” and “virgo prius”) and three-voice (“alma”) passages occur within a contrapuntal texture involving long lines and asymmetrical rhythmic gestures. Melismatic text setting prevails. The 2.p. in duple mensuration contrasts with the 1.p. in triple mensuration. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Virgo prius
