Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Though the chant (App. 1) is primarily relegated to S and often in semibreves, it may be anticipated in other voices (e.g., T and B, “porta manes”) or permeate the texture (“surgere…curat” and “virgo…posterius”). For the initial phrase, “alma…mater,” chant appears in T and S while A and B share new contrapuntal material in imitation. For the final textual phrase, “Gabrielis…illud,” Esquivel introduces homorhythmic style devoid of chant. A sequence of chords (d, g, d, E♭ c, d) expresses the final phrase, “peccatorum miserere.” Declamatory setting of text prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
