[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: [S]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. Range, B♭-f’’. Chr. II: [S]-C2; [A]-C3; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. Range, A-c’’. High clefs. “Alma” intonation in undesignated voice. Initial pitches of chant (App. 1) accompany respective textual phrases: “redemptoris mater” (B, Chr. I, mm. 1-4 & B, Chr. II, mm. 4-6); “quae…coeli” (A, T/B, S, Chr. II, imitation, mm. 6-10); “et stella maris” (S, T, Chr. II, semibreves, mm. 11-4); “tu” (B, T, S, Chr. I, imitation, mm. 24-8); “Virgo prius” (A, Chr. II, mm. 36-8); and “peccatorum” (A, T, B, S, Chr. II, imitation, mm. 50-5). Structurally, the antiphon consists of overlapping antiphonal phrases in each pars concluding with a tutti, respectively, “surgere quia curat populo” and “peccatorum miserere” (the two tutti segments constitute but 11 mm. of the antiphon’s 58 mm.). A contrapuntal texture primarily defines phrases in each choir including the tutti segments. The textual phrases “redemptoris mater” (mm. 1-7) and “sumens illud, ave” (44-7) are presented antiphonally with each choir harmonically independent. Final F, b♭ signature.
