Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, F-d’’. Chr. II: C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Range, F-g’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are differentiated through antiphonal techniques and contrasting mensuration; on the other hand, a uniform homophonic texture with syllabic text setting prevails throughout the antiphon. Tutti statements involve reiteration of text presented in Chr. I (“alma redemptoris mater” mm. 4-7) or continuation of textual phrase introduced in Chr. II (“surgere…populo” mm. 20-3; and “sumens…miserere” mm. 46-53). Third-related harmonies that simultaneously include a cross relationship emphasis text (e.g., “genuisti” mm. 24-5, F/D). Contrasting triple mensuration defines “surgere…populo” (mm. 19-23). Final F, b♭ signature.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
