Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C1; T-C3; B-F4. “Alma” intonation in B (consists of opening 4 pitches and final 3 pitches of “alma” melisma) differs from App. 1 but identical to that in AR094. Chant relegated to C only for “redemptoris mater.” Textual phrases are defined by contrasting textures and mensuration. Beginning of textural segments (“quae pervia,” “et stella me-,” “tuum sanctum,” and “Gabrie-“) reflects falsobordone style.[1] Triple mensuration and homorhythmic style for “surgere qui curat” (mm. 16-23) and “peccatorum miserere” (mm. 39-48) contrasts with surrounding material. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Falsobordone is characterized by a four-voice, homophonic style in root position. In this style the text is clearly understood; its use may reflect the influence of the Council of Trent reform promoted by Cardinals Carlo Borromeo and Vitello Vitellozzo.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
