[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F3. Paraphrased initial pitches of Salve regina (App. 4) verses (e.g., “Salve/vita,” “Ad te,” “Eia ergo” and “O dulcis) introduce the respective partes within an imitative texture; though the phrase “Et Jesum” is stated homophonically in breves, the chant motive is absent. Four partes (1, 2, 3 and 9) conclude with four measures of identical pitch content but with slight rhythmic variant for pars 3. To complement chant, identical material, respectively, accompanies text of verses 1 and 2[1] and verses 7 and 8. The words “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 9 are omitted. A combination of syllabic and melismatic styles define the text setting. Final g, verses 7 and 8 have final d; b♭ signature.

1. Salve regina settings by Arcadelt, SR021, Beausseron, SR037, Josquin, SR127, Misonne, SR172, Palestrina, SR195, Praetorius, SR216, Reiner, SR225, Richafort, SR230, Sermisy, SR236, and anonymous settings SR339, SR349, SR382, SR393, SR395 and SR476 follow the same procedure.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
