[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. The antiphon exhibits free treatment of Salve regina chant. Initial pitches of chant (App. 4) introduce some textual phrases (e.g., “salve,” verse 1 and “Eia,” verse 5) with rhythmic gestures comparable to other voices; inverted ”vita” motive (a, b♭, a instead of a, g, a), previously associated with “regina” in A (m. 3) also appears with “Et Jesum” (verse 6, mm. 81-4) as well as “virgo mater” (verse 9, mm. 125-9). Chant serves as a cantus firmus in T of verses 7, “O clemens” (mm. 99-1-6) and 8, “O pia” in S (mm. 106-11). Principal structural devices involve imitation (I) and paired imitation (PI).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
