[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[D]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C4; [B]-F3. High clefs, G-g’’. Paraphrased chant (App. 4) introduces 4.p. (A, T, D, B) within an imitative fabric. To emphasize verse 5, “eia ergo…,” the textual centerpiece of the antiphon, a highly imitative three-voice texture (labeled “Trio”) contrasts with the surrounding homorhythmic partes. Text repetition is most evident in partes 2 & 3; in 3.p. the text “nobis…ostende” is stated four times (mm. 63-78) with imitation and varying voice combinations in overlapping phrases (e.g., D, A, T, mm. 65-8; T, B, mm. 69-71; D, A, T, B, mm. 72-3; D, A, mm. 73-4; D, A, T, B, mm. 74-8). Except for melismas associated with “ventris tui” and “ostende” a syllabic text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature; e-flats are included in C 95.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
