[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[D]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C3; [B]-F4. No evidence of chant. Brief imitative passages introduce verses and partial verses of pars 1 & 2; the remainder of the respective verses reflects homorhythmic style (e.g., “miserecordiae,” mm. 3-7 and “illos…oculos,” mm. 31-8) or texture of independent voices. An imitative texture defines 3.p. Repetition of specific words or textual phrases may entail similar melodic or rhythmic material: 2 statements of “illos…oculos” (mm. 31-8); and 3 statements of “misericordiae” (mm. 3-7), “vita dulcedo” (mm. 8-11) & “fructum ventris tui” (mm. 46-55). A full-voice texture with overlapping phrases prevails. Syllabic text setting with short melismas in partes 3 & 4 defines the antiphon. Final F, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
