[C]-C1; [A]-C3; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4; [B]-F4. C tacet in 4.p. Entire range, D-f’’. Chant (App. 4), pitched on d, in continuous semibreves[1] (B) in each pars, supports full voice texture. Initial chant pitches influence upper voices in 1.p. (C, TI I, T I), 4.p. (T I, A) and 5.p. (T II, A, T I, C). Except for opening brief imitative passages for each pars, a dense texture of independent voices consists of motivic and rhythmic gestures principally of minums, semiminums and fusae. Of particular interest are the passages saturated with succinct melodic/rhythmic motives: “illos tuos,” 2.p., mm. 72-7; “ad nos converte,” 3.p., mm. 85-93; “nobis post hoc,” 4.p., mm. 110-15; “O pia,” 5.p., mm. 128-34; and “O dulcis virgo,” 5.p., 134-40. The antiphon is devoid of homophonic/homorhythmic passages. A primarily syllabic text setting includes occasional melismas. An umlaut in “exüles” (verse 3) confirms the Germanic origin of the manuscript. Final g, b♭ signature.

1. D-Mbs Mus.ms. 519 includes 6 Marian antiphons, three attributed to C. Martin (AR069, AC079 and RC133), two to O. Lassus (RC114 and SR145), and one anonymous Salve regina (SR337), each of which includes a cantus firmus of the appropriate Marian antiphon in continuous semibreves (notated in square black chant notation). In view of similar style characteristics in the three antiphons attributed to C. Martin in D-Mbs Mus.ms. 519 (see Notes for AR069, AC079 and RC133), SR337 should also be included in Martin’s lexicon of works.
