Polyphonic ensemble STBX

[D]-C1; Ct-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4) serves as cantus firmus in T (partes 1, 2, and 4) and Ct (pars 2); “vita” (“salve”) motto comprises dotted longa and two breves extending eight measures whereas paraphrased chant defines other segments (e.g., “dulcedo). Chant occasionally permeates the texture (e.g., “nobis post hoc,” mm. 79-86). Twenty-two statements of a descending stepwise ostinato of 10 pitches (a, g, f, e, d, e, d, c, B, A)[1] constitutes the B of the entire antiphon: partes 1 and 2, 6 statements each; 3.p., 7 statements plus initial five pitches associated with “Et Jesum” and “ostende” frame pars 3; 4.p., 3 statements. Pitch content of the ostinato remains constant, however rhythmic gestures primarily include dotted semibreves, semibreves and minums creating ostinati from 3-7 measures. Initial pitches of the ostinato (a-d) in Ct and D complement the “vita” motto in T. Limited concern for text underlay. Final d (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), a (4.p.).

1. SR328 contains a similar motive stated at the beginning of pars 1, and restated three times in pars 2.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
