[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C[1]-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-g’’. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4) serves as a cantus firmus in breves in pars 4 (“O pia,” mm. 141-60), introduces pars 2, as well as specific textual phrases all within an imitative, polyphonic texture: “et spes…salve,” mm. 15-24; “gementes et flentes,” mm. 45-48; “benedictum,” mm. 83-88; “fructum ventris,” mm. 96-106; and “nobis,” mm. 104-20. Although T and B allude to “Et Jesum” motive (mm. 71-3), the motive is quoted in A as semibreves and breves (mm. 78-81) in what is essentially an introduction to pars 3. Development of motivic material is characteristic of the antiphon; however, pars 3 comprised of 67 mm. best exemplifies the procedure. Motives also unify the antiphon. Two countersubjects in pars 1 correspond with motives in subsequent versets.
A motive in mm. 2-4 of A (g1, e♭1, c1, g1, d1) returns in all voices of pars 4; a second motive in mm. 2-4 of Q (g, b♭, c1, d1, g) accords with plainchant motive associated with “Ad te” (beginning of pars 2). A full voice texture prevails with the exception of imitative passages, and a segment alternating between 2, 3, and 4 voice statements of the text “post hoc exilium ostende” (mm. 120-30). Final g, b♭signature.

1. Cantus for partes 1 and 2 unavailable for transcription.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
