Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4; [B]-F4. The pitches cast as semibreves accompanying “ad te suspiramus” in T (mm. 14-7) suggest a relationship with chant though the association may be fortuitous. Within a primarily homophonic texture, a tripartite structure delineates verses 1-4, 5-6, and 7-9. To emphasize the initial phrase of verse 5, “eia ergo advocata nostra” (mm. 22-5=25-9), and the final verse “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 50-3=53-6) the entire musical fabric is restated for the respective texts. Declamatory style defined by syllabic text setting. Final e.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
