[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble STB

[S]-C2; T-C3; B-C4. Entire range, c-b♭’. Chant (App. 4) introduces each pars and emphasizes specific textual phrases (e.g., “nobis post hoc,” T in 3.p.), cast as longae, breves and semibreves: “salve” motto (T); “eya ergo” (S & B); et Jesum (T); “O clemens” (S) and “O pia” (B). To correspond with the three acclamations (verses 7-9), pars 4 consists of three independent sections. An imitiative contrapuntal texture with rhythmically active voices characterizes the antiphon. Except for T& B of 1.p. that carry textual incipits, voices are texted; text setting includes both syllabic style as well as lengthy melismas. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
