[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble

[D I]-G2; [D II]-C2; Ct-C2; [T I]-C4 (1.p.), C3 (2.p., 3.p., 4.p.); B-F4. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4) serves as a segmented cantus firmus (Ct) with anticipatory statements of “vita” (“salve”) motto in pars 1 and of “Et Jesum” motive in pars 3; in Ct the “Et Jesum” motive is preceded by a breve rest and followed by 9 breve rests. Chant introduces pars 4 (21 mm.) in continuous breves and concludes with free material. Of equal structural significance is the quotation of the S of Johannes Ghiselin’s Ghy syt die wertste bovenal[1] in D I of this Salve regina. The author’s plea to the worthiest, beautiful, noble pure lady for his misfortune also constitutes a plea to the Virgin Mary. Vinders quotes approximately three quarters of the borrowed melody (transposed a fifth higher) in pars 1, the complete melody in partes 2 and 3, and the initial twenty pitches in augmentation in pars 4. Limited concern for text underlay. Final d (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), a (4.p.).

Ghy syt die wertste bovenal / You are the worthiest of all
Int eertsche dal, / In this earthly valley,
Kuysch ende small: / Chaste and slender:
Gheen schoender creature. / [There is] no fairer creature.
Aenhoert myn claghen: myn misval / Hear my plea: my misfortune
Is sonder ghetal / Is beyond measure
Tot alder huere. / At every hour.
Schoen, edel, pure, / Beautiful, noble, pure [lady],
Ghy syt myn troost alleine, / You alone are my comfort,
Nochtans sydy der werelt ghemaine, / Yet you are [here] for the whole world.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
