Choir 1

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: S I-G2; S II-G2; A I-C2; B-C4. High clefs. Range, c-g’’. Chr. II: S III-C1; A II-C2; T-C3; B II-F4. Range, G-e♭’’. In V1425 (1600) an organ part was added to duplicate voices of Chr. I. The presence of chant (App. 4) is limited to the partes assigned to Chr. I (1.p., 3.p., 6.p.) and Chr. II (2.p., 4.p.) wherein appropriate Salve regina plainsong in breves and semibreves introduces textual phrases within an imitative texture; 2.p. (“vita dulcedo” and “et spes nostra” motives) and 6.p. (“Et Jesum,” “benedictum,” “fructum,” and “nobis” motives) exemplify the inclusion of chant. On the other hand, pars 5, devoted to verse 5, the textual centerpiece of the antiphon, and pars 7, the three acclamations (verses 7-9), personify antiphony with negligible reference to chant. Structurally, 5.p. and 7.p. are similar: 1. homophonic texture, 2. overlapping alternate responses throughout, 3. initial alternation involves transposition at lower fourth (5.p., “Eia ergo”) or upper octave (7.p., “O clemens”), 4. remainder of pars entails varied statements or repetition (5.p., “illos…converte,” mm. 86-101=101-15; 7.p., “O dulcis virgo Maria,” mm. 162-81=182-201). Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
