[1] Vita, dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Q-C1; A-C3; Sx-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, G-f’’. Alternatim setting. “Vita” (“salve”) motto prominently displayed in longae and breves (C) and supported by a series of motivic entries (mm. 1-7) introduces the antiphon. Amid repeated statements of “et spes nostra” based in chant (App. 4), “salve,” the final word of verse 2, recalls the “salve” motto of verse 1. A variety of voice groups contrasts with the full-voice segments that account for almost half of pars 1, 3, and 4. Antiphonal treatment of “benedictum” (mm. 89-95) involves an imitative statement by upper voices (C, Q, A) restated by lower voices (Sx, T, B). A descending stepwise melody depicts “in hac lacrimarum valle.” Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), a (4.p.); b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
