C-C1; Sx-C1; A-C3; Q-C4; T-C4; B-F4. A paraphrased “salve” motto similar to mottos in SR249 and SR252 appears in a series of imitative statements (mm. 1-9) punctuated by the “salve” motto in C (mm. 8-10) and B (mm. 9-10). The paraphrased “vita” (“salve”) motto appears prominently (T, mm. 18-23), as does the motto (Sx, mm. 19-21 and C, mm. 21-24). Indeed, chant (App. 4) performs a significant role throughout the antiphon introducing most textual phrases; the contrasting 2.p. for three upper voices (C, Sx, A) is satiated with chant. A variety of voice groupings contrasts with the full-voice sections that account for about two-fifths of pars 1 and 3. Brief antiphonal segments articulate the close of verse 1 (“misericordiae,” mm. 15-8) and verse 6 (“post hoc exilium,” mm. 134-8). Declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
