[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; Q-C3; [2.p., Q-G2]; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. “Salve” intonation (C). Primarily cast as breves and semibreves, chant quotations (App. 4) serve as cantus firmi, introduce textual phrases, or emphasis specific words. Cantus firmus treatment defines “regina” (C, mm. 1-8), “miserecordes” (T, mm. 63-9); “et Jesum benedictum” (A, mm. 78-87), “O clemens” (Q, mm. 97-103) and “O pia” (C, mm. 103-8). To introduce the final textual phrase of 2.p., “ad nos converte,” chant permeates the texture (Q, A, C, T, mm. 71-4). Plainsong articulates “nobis” in verse 6 (C & T, mm. 88-91). A reduced number of voices (C, A, Q, T) emphasizes verse 5, “Eya ergo…” the textual centerpiece of the tripartite structure. Textual phrases in 1.p. and 3.p. are differentiated through presence of chant quotations, and texture. Though an imitative, polyphonic texture prevails, homorhythmic texture with independent voices characterizes the first half of verse 4, “ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes,” wherein “suspiramus” is surrounded by rests. Final g, b♭ signature; e-flats and f sharps are notated in S 4204, but additional e-flats are necessary.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
