Type

Motet

Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SX

C-C1; Ct-C4. T-C4. Chant is limited to plainsong accompanying “salve regina” in C and “nobis” in T (mm. 52-6) and Ct (mm. 54-5) within a continuum of three independent voices. A C/T axis supports a treble-dominated texture; MS BolU 2216 affirms the structure with text underlay of C and T. Compound duple and triple mensurations are freely interchanged throughout the antiphon. Descending stepwise sequential passages involving all voices (mm. 61-3 and 68-70) prepare cadences on d. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Final a.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
