Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

D-G2; Q-C1; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Chant (App. 4) emphasizes specific words: embellished “salve” motto, (D, mm. 1-3);
“salve,” (T, mm. 4-6); “vita,” (B, T, mm. 8-10); “Et Jesum,” (B, mm. 62-4); “nobis,” (B, mm. 72-4 & A-mm. 73-5). The “salve” motto also underscores the “salve” that conludes v. 2 (T, mm. 15-7). Chant, in semibreves, serves as a cantus firmus with the acclamations “O clemens” and “O pia” (mm. 83-94). A contrapuntal texture with brief, imitative passages (e.g., “ad te,” A/B, mm. 18-20; “illos,” Q/A, mm. 31-2), markedly independent voices, and overlapping phrases prevails. A full-voice texture defines 1.p. Note: T & B are silent for the first 19 mm. of 2.p. (mm. 43-62) and B is absent for the initial 6 mm of 3.p. (mm. 82-7). Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
