Principal chant motives (App. 4) primarily set apart in semibreves permeate the imitative, contrapuntal texture: “salve,” mm. 1-10; “vita,” mm. 16-23; “Et Jesum,” mm. 73-7; and “O clemens/O pia,” mm. 90-8. Another unifying device involves a trio of motives (M1, M2, M3) each concluding with pitches a, b♭, usually stated in the lowest voice (B, T I, or T II). The first two of three appearances of M1 within mm. 9-26 coincide with “salve/vita” motto; in fact, mm. 17-20 (“vita dulcedo”) are a variant of mm. 9-12 (“salve regina”). All seven statements of M2 within mm. 63-73 accompany the second half of verse 5, “illos…converte”; two statements in C I (mm. 65-9) include a whole step instead of the half step. Three statements of M3 are coupled with “O dulcis virgo” (mm. 98-103). Brief passages in third and tenths are sprinkled throughout the motet. Harmonic progressions accompanying “in hac lacrymarum valle” express the text (A, d, B♭, d, a, E). Declamatory setting primarily in syllabic style prevails. Final d.
