[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Sx-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. “Salve” intonation (Sx). Chant (App. 4) introduces most textual phrases where it pervades the imitative, contrapuntal texture. Chant associated with “regina” appears in the upper three voices supported by contrasting motivic material treated imitatively in lower three voices. The three-measure homophonic passage devoted to “et Jesum” includes a slightly varied chant motive (B) as well as a supplicatory gesture in T. Despite the division in two partes, the overall structure suggests a symmetrical five-part format: 1. verses 1 and 2 (mm.1-29); 2. verses 3 and 4 (mm. 30-73); 3. verse 5 (mm. 74-109); 4. verse 6 (mm. 110-27); 5. verses 7-9 (mm. 127-49). A declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
