[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. “Salve” intonation in C. This antiphon exhibits structural and organizational principles comparable to those in SR192. For verses 1 and 2, chant (App. 4), primarily cast in semibreves, appears in C with imitative statements in Q surrounded by new motivic material treated imitatively. To complement the identical plainsong for verses 1 and 2 Palestrina states the entire polyphonic texture for mm. 1-11 and 14-24.[1] Except for hints of chant (e.g., “filii Evae” (T), mm. 31-4; “gementes,” mm. 38-9; and “advocata,” mm. 56-8), the remainder of the motet consists of new material. The text “Et Jesum” in homophonic style is preceded by a semibreve rest in all voices; however, the chant motive is not included. Expressive harmonic progressions accompany the three final acclamations (verses 7-9) within pseudo-homophonic style: “O dulcis virgo Maria,” d, F, c, E♭, B♭, d, g, D, G. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature; several e-flats included in original edition.

1. Salve regina settings by Arcadelt, SR021, Beausseron, SR037, Josquin, SR127, Misonne, SR172, Praetorius, SR216, Reiner, SR225, Richafort, SR230, Sermisy, SR236, and anonymous settings SR339, SR349, SR358, SR376, SR382, SR393, SR395 and SR476 follow the same procedure.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
