C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. “Salve” intonation in B. Introduced within a segment (mm. 1-7) manifesting invertible counterpoint (B/T and C/A), chant (App. 4) occupies a central role in the structure of the motet. Textual phrases may be defined by a single voice devoted to the plainsong melody, usually in semibreves, supported by new contrapuntal material (e.g., “regina” and “vita dulcedo,” mm. 1-18) but, more frequently, chant introduces textual phrases within an imitative texture. Chant particularly permeates the texture of verses 5 (mm. 59-88) and 6 (mm. 89-110). Each of the voices is either restated for verse 9 (B, mm. 43-51=52-6 and C, mm. 42-51=51-8) or undergoes variation (A, mm. 42-50=51-6 and T, mm. 40-8=50-6). The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.
