Polyphonic ensemble SSSA

C I-C1; C II-C1; C III-C1; A-C2. Voci pari. Entire range, g-d’’. Textual phrases are delineated through presence and specific use of chant (App. 4), contrasting motivic material, texture and rhythmic gestures. “Salve” motto, presented in A, C II and C I in breves (mm. 1-8) introduces verse 1 of chant that serves as cantus firmus in C II (mm. 8-18); to complement verse 1, the chant melody of verse 2, assigned to C I (mm. 18-26), is cast in identical rhythm. Chant pervades the imitative fabric of verses 1 and 2 but most notably verse 3, “Ad te clamamus.” Except for hints of chant (e.g., “advocata’ and “misericordes” in verse 6) the remainder of the antiphon consists of new thematic material. The text “Et Jesum” in homophonic style is preceded by a semibreve rest in all voices; however, the chant motive is not included. Through a rearrangement of voices for verse 9, mm. 46-52 equal mm. 52-58 (C I moves to C III, C II to C I and C III-C II; the T is repeated). The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g; b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
