Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, G-e’’. An examination of initial measures of Salve regina verses demonstrates the variety of compositional techniques present in this antiphon. Chant, primarily cast as breve and semibreves, introduces “Salve regina” within the context of invertible counterpoint (S/A=B/T, mm. 1-10); the contrasting contrapuntal voices (A & T) consist of semiminums & fusae. The supplications addressed to Mary (“ad te”) in verses 3 & 4 are underscored through separation of statements and antiphony (mm. 25-31 and 34-7). To emphasize verse 5, the centerpiece of the antiphon, and complement the trochaic prosody, “Eia, eia ergo” is treated antiphonally and presented in homophonic/homorhythmic style (mm. 47-9 and 53-61); duple mensuration defines the remainder of the verse. A full-voice texture introduces “Et Jesum” wherein A & B of both choirs sustain root and fifth of chord on g (mm. 76-7) while C & T of choirs entwine semiminums around b-flat. The two acclamations (verses 7 & 8) present a reflective tone with slow harmonic rhythm (breves, mm. 87-91): “O clemens,” (Chr. II, C, a, E); “O pia,” (Chr. I, E, A, G). Verse 9, “O dulcis…Maria,” in homorhythmic texture (Chr. I, mm. 91-4,) and restated in Chr. II (mm. 94-8) concludes with a full-voice texture of independent voices supported by bass (breves) of each choir (D, G, C, G, d, A, D). Full-voice texture (8 voices) with independent voices defines “Mater misericordiae” (mm. 11-5), “et spes nostra salve” (mm. 23-5), “ad te clamamus” (mm. 28-31), “ad te suspiramus” (mm. 36-8), “Et Jesum…tui” (mm. 75-82) and “O dulcis Virgo Maria” (mm. 99-106). An overlapping choir frequently lacks the third of the chord that is provided by the other choir. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
