Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-CI; A-C3; T-C4; Q-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 4), as semibreves, introduces textual phrases and permeates the imitative, polyphonic texture. The “Salve” motto, abbreviated to initial three pitches in C, A, & T, is complete in B, Q & C (mm. 1-7). “Vita” motto, cast as breves in C, is treated similarly in other voices (mm. 11-16) as the “Salve” motto in verse 1. Additional chant quotations appear with “Et Jesum” (mm. 50-4), “nobis” (mm. 61-5), “O clemens” (mm. 69-73) and “O dulcis” (mm. 76-82). Brief passages for 3 and 4 voices (e.g., “nobis post hoc exilium ostende,” mm. 66-9) contrast with the full-voice texture. Homorhythmic texture defines “et spes nostra salve” (mm. 18-20), “exules filii Evae” (mm. 26-8) and “suspiramus” (mm. 31-2. Final d; b-flats and additional accidentals (f♯ & g♯) included in M 3642.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
