[Ct]-C2; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-b♭’. Alternatim setting. Chant[1] introduces initial textual phrases of the first three partes wherein it pervades the imitative texture; a cantus firmus in long-note values (T II, mm. 74-9) defines 4.p., and 5.p. carries a cantus firmus (T I) for the initial five measures (mm. 86-90). Tranposed a fourth higher, the chant for verse 2 is punctuated with a minim rest between “vita” and “dulcedo” in each voice. The opening five measures closely resemble those of SR153 New material is treated imitatively in each pars. The word “et” omitted in “et spes nostra” of verse 2. Declamatory style prevails in a text setting that combines syllabic and melismatic writing. Final g, to complement chant final a for 4.p.; b♭ signature; a number of e-flats are included in MS.

1. Within the alternatim procedure, the conclusion of verse 6, “nobis post hoc exsilium ostende,” remains in plainsong, a practice common to Salve regina settings by Spanish composers which could suggest use of a Spanish version of the chant. On the other hand, Maillard’s polyphonic setting of verses 7 and 9 in alternation with plainsong of verse 8 contrasts with the Spanish practice of grouping the three acclamations together. Chant for the antiphon appears to have been modeled upon a sixteenth-century antiphonary (App. 4); yet, specific segments (e.g., “gementes,” “Et Jesum” and “O dulcis”) do not concord with available sources.
