Chant (App. 4) appears most frequently in T in long-note values surrounded by motives in imitation (e.g., “salve, mm 1-8; “vita,” mm. 24-31; “O clemens,” 208-25; and “O pia,” mm. 226-36). Plainsong cast in duplex longae and breves (T) distinguishes 2.p. (“Eia ergo,” “illos tuos” and “oculos”). Chant is assimilated into other voices (D and B, mm. 13-18) or entirely absent (e.g., “gementes…valle,” mm. 79-91 and “advocata nostra,” mm. 107-21). Sequential and ostinato techniques abound throughout the antiphon. In preparation of the final cadence of 1.p. four independent patterns in D, Ct, T, and B each comprising four minums descend by the interval of a third in all voices (mm. 85-9). B and D ostinati involve sequential patterns of triple (mm. 92-104) and quintuple (mm. 238-42) groups of minums within duple mensuration. Groups of triplets in D, Ct, and B define “O pia,” verse 8 (mm. 225-32). Text underlay is of limited concern. The words “mater” of verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 9 are omitted. Final d.
