[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

D-C1; A-C2; T-C4; B-F4. The most extensive presence of chant (App. 4) occurs in the 1.p. and 2.p. wherein each pars the “salve” motto anticipates the entrance of a cantus firmus in long-note values (D in 1.p. and B in 2.p.) coupled with sequential passages involving the full texture; initial pitches of chant introduce subsequent partes. Paired imitation (D/A and T/B) introduces 4.p. Compositional procedures typically used by Isaac abound in the antiphon: ostinati in A/B (mm. 242-50) and B (mm. 289-95); repeat of full texture at a different pitch (mm. 14-18 and mm. 94-106); and stepwise descending first-inversion chords (mm. 185-90). The ubiquitous presence of sequences descending stepwise usually with the interval of a tenth between outer voices defines each pars except the seven-measure 8.p., “O clemens.” Triple mensuration differentiates 1.p. as well as the conclusion of verse 7 (“ostende,” mm. 242-52). A melismatic text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
