Ne timeas Maria,[1] the antiphon at Lauds for the Annunciation serves as a cantus firmus (T) in long-note values in full-voice sections (verses 2-4, the final word of verse 6, “ostende” and verses 8 and 9); the Ct carries the cantus firmus in verse 7, “O clemens.” Huchyn includes two complete statements of the chant melody: 1. verses 2-6; 2. initial 14 pitches for verse 7, “O clemens,” subsequent 14 pitches, verse 8, “O pia” and final 24 pitches, verse 9, “O virgo Maria, salve.” Whereas imitation serves a minor role, rhythmic gestures that pervade the texture (e.g., “benedictum…ostende”) unify the characteristic florid fabric of the antiphon. Textual phrases are distinguished through full voice and reduced voices (2 or 3), specific voice groupings and contrast of mensuration most evident with the Virgo mater[2] trope verses and the three invocations they precede. The trope verses and two invocations (“O clemens” and O pia”) in duple mensuration contrast with triple mensuration of verses 1-6 and the final invocation, “O dulcis Maria, salve.” Final G.
