[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[Tp]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. The original version of 1555 (G 4867) is in polyphony throughout but a revised version (GuatC 4) substitutes plainsong according to alternatim practice. Chant,[1] usually cast in breves or semibreves, introduces textual phrases within an imitative, contrapuntal texture. The concluding words of verse 1 (“misericordae”) and verse 4 (“lacrimarum”) predominately display presence of minums concurrant with chant. Though intact at beginning of phrases and specific words, chant is treated with freedom as voices unfold. Except for introductory imitative passages, a full-voice texture coupled with declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

For transcription of Salve regina chant, see MRM 9, pp. 70-2.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
