[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Paraphrased chant (App.4) permeates the texture in an antiphon constructed of pervading imitation with overlapping textual phrases. Paired imitation (S/A and T/B) introduces 2.p. Except for the “salve” motto and its parallel, “vita,” set apart in semibreves, chant embraces supple rhythmic gestures comprised of semibreves, dotted minums, minums and semiminums. Whereas most composers use long-note values or a homorhythmic texture to differentiate the words “Et Jesum,” Gombert simply absorbs them within the prevailing texture. Declamatory style defines text setting. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
